Wrestling with Truth
March 28, 2008 by pistolpete
During a Creative Writing workshop, we were asked to develop a story or poem out of a situation. The situation was that the strongest person in the world challenged you to a wrestling match. Here’s the poem I wrote –
My opponent sticks out his hand
against mine.
It’s something
I’ve never faced before.
Locked in a battle
time against time.
Holding firm
with Truth on my side.

Fantastic Pete! Truth, though it often seems quite elusive, is truly all that we really have in this world.
The Pistol fires back: Thanks for chiming in. Good point.
Hey Pistol,
I heard that you were (are??) recently hospitalized. Just wanted to send you my thoughts and I hope everything is ok.
The Pistol fires back: I’m home now, doing some better. Thanks for your thoughts.
Wow, that’s some subject. My poem might be a simple one.
what the hell am I doing fighting you? I was going to bake you a cherry pie. Didn’t you get the memo?
The Pistol fires back: I like that. Perhaps I should hold a “Necessary Therapy Poetry Contest” some day.
Peter,
I just found out. JUST NOW! I’m sorry.
Hope you’re OK. Please let me know.
Also, give up on EVEN pretending food is decent in a Psych ward. I think it’s intentionally bad as a motivator to hasten the exit from that hellish existence.
I hope you’re as well as well can be…all things considered.
Onward my friend.
The Pistol fires back: I’m doing fairly well. I’m home now, mostly sleeping. The medication makes me dopey and I’m depressed about the whole thing. I think you are right about not receiving good food in a Psych ward. I think the same thing applies to prison.

I’m glad you’re home.
E-mail me if you need anything. Remember, I know what you’re going through. I get it. …completely.
LK
The Pistol fires back: Thanks for being there.
Glad to see you back and posting. Sorry you had to go through that experience my friend. It was for a reason as I know you know. What reason? Well that you may never know.
I remember when I was an active Young Life leader I had a kid in our Bible Study group that just wasn’t getting it. I prayed for him but felt sure he would never be a Christian–his home life, school life and social life were in a downward spiral and I felt I could do nothing to stop it.
Well, that kid became a Young LIfe leader, went to seminary, became a youth pastor and leads a large Young Life region here in Texas. He is likely responsible for 1000’s of kids converting. So….the point…God’s plan is bigger than ours and he can see the whole picture. Kind of wish He would send me the DVD so I can know what the heck is going on sometimes though.
Stay strong–and March ON!

The Pistol fires back: Thanks for your encouraging words.
I’m listening to some Rossini and thinking of you.
The Pistol fires back: Thank you. I really appreciate it.
