In “The Bible and Homosexuality (Part One)“, I explored some of what Marion L. Soards contends in his book Scripture & Homosexuality: Biblical Authority and the Church Today. After affirming the foundational authority of Scripture, Soards goes on to examine relevant texts on the subject of homosexuality and finds there is little that directly addresses the moral quagmire in which we find ourselves in regard to sexuality.
Soards does, however, point to three New Testament passages that demand consideration. In part one, we looked at 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 and discovered that, in the Greek (literally “soft ones” and “male bedders”), it provides a warning against partners within a same-gender sexual relationship. While scholars dispute the meaning of these terms, there is no doubt that some form of sexual activity similar to what might be found today is here identified.
In Romans 1:26-27, the homosexual relationship is more directly addressed. In a section dealing with the sinful condition of humanity, homosexuality is identified as a symptom of sin. Soards quotes Richard Hays who writes -

Paul singles out homosexual intercourse for special attention because he regards it as providing a particularly graphic image of the way in which human fallenness distorts God’s created order. God the creator made man and woman for each other, to cleave together, to be fruitful and multiply. When human beings engage in homosexual activity, they enact an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual activity: the rejection of the Creator’s design. They embody the spiritual condition of those who have “exchanged the truth about God for a lie”. (Sojourners 20 [July 1991]: 19).
Soards summarizes Scriptural findings on the subject of homosexuality by stating these relationships are outside the boundaries of God’s intentions for humanity. Homosexuality is neither the only sin of humanity nor is it the worst sin. It is a simply evidence of sin, of our separation from God due to our sinful nature. He boldly asserts:
“There is no way to read the Bible as condoning homosexual acts.”
For me, this is the crux of the issue. I have many friends who, in an effort to undermine the authority of Scripture or reveal my hypocrisy, point to a wide variety of Scriptural teachings against such things as eating pork or shellfish, getting divorced, having women in positions of church leadership, even liberating slaves.
The point, however, is that when we closely study Scripture, there are alternative texts which counterbalance most (if not all) of these teachings. Interpreting Scripture with Scripture, we can conclude that dietary restrictions are no longer so rigid, that there are (perhaps) some limited grounds for divorce, that women have always served in a variety of leadership roles, that in Christ we are “neither slave nor free”.
But when it comes to same gender sexual activity, there is simply nothing to counterbalance those texts which clearly speak against it. The most proponents of homosexual activity can do is dismiss the Bible as irrelevant for the world today. And, as a Christian who holds the Bible to be God’s written Word, I just can’t go there.

more on homosexuality…
“Mom, My Gay Therapist, and the Chief”

Great post Pete. I agree, the crux of the issue is that Scripture never condones it. On one hand we shouldn’t make it out to be worse than any other sin – at least spiritually speaking (there are obviously different earthly consequences), be any sin was enough to send Jesus to the cross.
The Pistol fires back: I absolutely agree. Sin is sin, though consequences may be different.
reverend obese,
give it up before you die in jail
The Pistol fires back: I guess I’ll just have to take that risk. I will go on a diet, though.
Sodomy and homosexuality has been mentioned in story of prophet Lot and his tribe, and how God treated with them. Even the word sodomy comes from their city- Sodom- an ancient city of Palestine that was destroyed by God for its wickedness and homosexual acts of its people(Biblical). Sodom is also refered to wicked and corrupt place..
Plus to the fact i mentioned in previous post, that’s against circle of nature..
The Pistol fires back: You are right, to a degree. Homosexual behavior was one of the sins of Sodom (there were others). Certainly sodomy has become known as same gender sexual activity. And, it is against God’s will as described in Scripture.
I think it interesting that (in Matthew 19: 3ff) Jesus talks about the union of a man and a woman by referring back to creation, then suggests that any departure from that relationship, other than for the cause of adultery, is in itself adultery. This is one argument for the use of sex only within a committed male-female relationship. Is there much difference between denying a single person sex of any kind and denying sex to people of the same sex? Neither is really a denial as much as a protection by the loving God who went to the cross for us. Am curious what you think of the logic of this Christian post: http://shushnow.wordpress.com/2008/03/01/what-if-i-were-gay/
The Pistol fires back: You make a great point, looking at the positive boundary side of a healthy marriage (man/woman). The post you led me to is excellently written and makes a compelling point. I agree gay persons don’t choose to be gay. They do choose, however, whether to have sex. I also agree the church should accept them, but not sanction/condone their same-gender sexual activity. I wrote a little on this in my post, “I Do Have One Gay Friend” – http://pistolpete.wordpress.com/2008/01/15/i-do-have-one-gay-friend/
Thanks for writing in. You always have something interesting to say.
Very graciously clear. Here is a thought we wrestled with in the Romans passage when our pastor preached on it recently.
One idea about the Romans passage is that perhaps this sin was brought up since it was so rare and a minority of people did it. It was kind of a “gotcha” moment to tell the readers that this was a sign of sin that “others” had, then in later verses to reveal that all of us are guilty of sin which shows up in other ways. The intention was not to single out the homosexual sin as much as it was to get the attention of the readers to the main point of sin in that passage.
The Pistol fires back:
Rich, good to hear from you. I’ve missed your thoughtful reflections. I assume you’ve been consumed by the daily grind of academia. Me, I have it easy out here in the pastoral world.
Possible. I would doubt, however, that it was rare in the culture, given the prevalence of pederasty in ancient Greece. It is also mentioned by such renowned authors as Homer and Aeschylus. It is possible, though, that it was rare in Jewish culture (or assumed to be). Whatever the case, you are right that it is not singled out and therefore I think it would be wrong of us to demonize it as the worst of all sins. As you say, it is a symptom of the larger problem of sin.
I thought there were some relationships in the Bible that could be interpreted as homosexual -like David and Jonathan, for example.
The Pistol fires back: Some modern folk with a point to prove try to stretch the truth of Scripture in such a way as to make something like a David/Jonathan affair plausible. But I don’t buy it.
No one has ever proven anything has happened through divine intervention and never will because there is no god(s). Stop pushing your opinions on others or start proving something happened because of your god.
The Pistol fires back: Thanks for your response. I don’t feel the need to show proof of God. God can handle that all on His own.
Topic: The Bible and Homosexuality (Part Two)
I found this post from Lee, he really dives in to the Word and looks closely and intelligently at the verses- -worth a read!
“While you’re at it, here’s a list of every verse in the Bible that mentions Sodom and sin. While it’s being read to you, note carefully just what sins she was guilty of–and what is not even mentioned.
If homosexualty is/was OK why did God destroy Sodom (please back your answer with the Word)
OK. I will. I don’t think it’ll do any good–after all, presenting you with the Word has been rejected before–but here goes.
Presented for the information of anyone interested are ALL the verses in the Bible that mention Sodom as translated in the NKJV. If you don’t like that version, you can look up the references for yourself. My comments will be in boldfaced blue.
Genesis 10:19–And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, as far as Lasha.
Genesis 10:19–And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, as far as Lasha.
Genesis 13:10–And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it {was} well watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.
Nothing so far. Apparently, though Sodom was a nice place to live in.
Genesis 13:12–Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched {his} tent even as far as Sodom.
Genesis 13:13–But the men of Sodom {were} exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD.
What do you know? First mention of Sodom being sinful. What good it be, though? “Exceedingly wicked and sinful” is rather generic, don’t you think? Not too specific. Pride, gluttony, murder, theft, oppressing the poor, lying–none of these gets a good recommendation anywhere in the Bible. But let’s go on.
Genesis 14:2–{that} they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).
Genesis 14:8–And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that {is}, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim
Genesis 14:10–Now the Valley of Siddim {was full of} asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; {some} fell there, and the remainder fled to the mountains.
Genesis 14:11–Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way.
Genesis 14:12–They also took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
Genesis 14:17–And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that {is}, the King’s Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who {were} with him.
Genesis 14:21–Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.”
Genesis 14:22–But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,
The passage, excerpted above, is the story of the kidnapping and rescue of Lot. The people of Sodom couldn’t have been ALL bad if they helped, would they?
Genesis 18:16–Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way.
Genesis 18:20–And the LORD said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave,
“Very grave”–but what?
Genesis 18:22–Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD.
Genesis 18:26–And the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”
Genesis 19:1–Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw {them}, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.
Genesis 19:4–Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house.
Actually, the Hebrew for “men of Sodom” is generic: men AND women.
Whether this story is about homosexuality hinges on exactly what the Hebrew verb YADA (“to know”) means here.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, it has sexual meanings in only 10 of the 1000 times it appears in the Hebrew text. There has been disagreement for centuries if it had such meaning here. The earliest commentators and translators did NOT believe it did. (It’s been only since 1100 or so that homosexuality was seen in this story. Rather late in the day for that, don’t you think?) All ancient translations use a word meaning “to know” in the ordinary
non-sexual sense here, as opposed to such passages as “And Adam knew his wife …” where words meaning sexual intercourse are used.
IF the word YADA has sexual meaning here (which is doubtful, remember) at most it refers to gang rape. Compare this with the similar story in Judges 19:14 ff. If Genesis 19 condemns any and all homosexuality, then Judges 19 condemns any and all heterosexuality.
Common sense should tell you that not all heterosexuality is gang rape, any more than all homosexuality is gang rape.
But I digress. Let’s continue.
Genesis 19:24–Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.
Genesis 19:28–Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace.
Nothing here about homosexuality.
Deuteronomy 29:23– ‘The whole land {is} brimstone, salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and His wrath.’
Deuteronomy 32:32–For their vine {is} of the vine of Sodom and of the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes {are} grapes of gall, their clusters {are} bitter.
Nothing here about homosexuality, either.
Isaiah 1:9–Unless the LORD of hosts had left to us a very small remnant, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been made like Gomorrah.
Isaiah 1:10–Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; give ear to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah:
Isaiah 3:9–The look on their countenance witnesses against them, and they declare their sin as Sodom; they do not hide {it}. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.
Isaiah 13:19–And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride, will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
Stirring! Definitely something nasty that aroused God’s wrath. But what’s missing here? Raise your hand, class. Anyone have an idea?
Jeremiah 23:14–Also I have seen a horrible thing in the prophets of Jerusalem: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they also strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns back from his wickedness. All of them are like Sodom to Me, and her inhabitants like Gomorrah.
Hey, here’s something to go on. Specific sins are mentioned for a change: adultery, lying, accessories to crime, unrepentance.
But nope, no homosexuality. (And it was so CLOSE!)
Jeremiah 49:18–{As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities},” says the LORD, “No one shall abide there, nor shall a son of man dwell in it.
Jeremiah 50:40–As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring {cities},” says the LORD, “{So} no one shall reside there, nor son of man dwell in it.
Well, no one is denying that S&G suffered Divine Wrath. But Jeremiah doesn’t tell us why.
Lamentations 4:6–The punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, with no hand to help
her!
WOW! Whatever the sin of the Jewish people was, it must have been something worse than homosexuality. (Which, so far, hasn’t really been mentioned.)
Ezekiel 16:46– “Your elder sister {is} Samaria, who dwells with her daughters to the north of you; and your younger sister, who dwells to the south of you, {is} Sodom and her daughters.
Ezekiel 16:48– “{As} I live,” says the Lord GOD, “neither your sister Sodom nor her daughters have done as you and your daughters have done.
Ezekiel 16:49– “Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
Thank you, Ezekiel! You’re very specific here. Now we have something definite and concrete to go on.
Look, everyone, here are the sins of Sodom that God destroyed her for:
Pride and haughtiness.
Gluttony. (Conspicuous consumption, maybe?)
Lazy and slothful.
Refusing to help the unfortunate and oppressed,
And what else? Why, of course, homo…….oooo…
What? Well, it’s not here! Nothing even REMOTELY sexual.
Oh, well, we still have some more verses to check out.
Ezekiel 16:53– “When I bring back their captives, the captives of Sodom and her daughters, and the captives of Samaria and her daughters, then {I will also bring back} the captives of your captivity among them,
Ezekiel 16:55– “When your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters return to their former state, then you and your daughters will return to your former state.
Ezekiel 16:56– “For your sister Sodom was not a byword in your mouth in the days of your pride,
Nothing much more in Ezekiel except repeating the pride business.
Amos 4:11– “I overthrew {some} of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand plucked from the burning; yet you have not returned to Me,” says the LORD.
Zephaniah 2:9–Therefore, as I live,” says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, “Surely Moab shall be like Sodom, and the people of Ammon like Gomorrah; overrun with weeds and saltpits, and a
perpetual desolation; the residue of My people shall plunder them, and the remnant of My people shall possess them.”
Well, so far, God overthrew Sodom for pride, gluttony, laziness, hard-heartedness, adultery, lying (especially by religious leaders), accessories to crime, unrepentance–all terrible things, and all things that the Prophets condemned.
But no mention of homosexuality.
So much for the Old Testament. Let’s check out the new.
Matthew 10:15– “Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!
Matthew 11:23– “And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
Matthew 11:24– “But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
Well, whatever sins the people of Sodom had, they at least had more faith than the Jews did during the days of His earthly sojourn!
Mark 6:11– “And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”
Luke 10:12– “But I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.
To save you some trouble, these Gospel passages are all reporting the same thing: Jesus says that those places that will not receive His messengers with hospitality and serious attention are sinning more grievously than the people of Sodom did–whatever that was.
In other words, even homosexuality (which has not yet been mentioned as being one of Sodom’s sins) is not as bad as hard-heartedness, scorn, and being inhospitable.
Luke 17:29– “but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed {them} all.
Oddly enough, the context of this verse includes the one about “two men in the same bed” (v. 34)–and the Greek word for “bed” here has sexual connotations.
But in any case, it’s talking about the Parousia and Last Judgement.
And in light of verse 34, there’s nothing here condemning homosexuality as such.
Romans 9:29–And as Isaiah said before: “Unless the LORD of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom, and we would have been made like Gomorrah.”
Which verse wasn’t very specific about what Sodom’s sins were when Isaiah first said it.
2 Peter 2:6–and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned {them} to destruction, making {them} an example to those who afterward would live ungodly;
We all agree that pride, gluttony, laziness, hard-heartedness, adultery, lying, being accessories to crime, unrepentance are ungodly things.
But these are the only sins of Sodom the Bible has mentioned.
Jude 1:7–as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Sexual immorality–quite a broad category to be sure, but so far no Biblical mention that Sodom’s “adultery” included homosexuality.
As far as “strange flesh”, the Greek words here give the roots of our modern English word “heterosexual.”
Revelation 11:8–And their dead bodies {will lie} in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
“The Great City” in this verse is obviously Jerusalem. While the verse might have some bearing on the present crisis in that area today, it says nothing about the sins of Sodom, except to echo what Jesus warned about being inhospitable to Him and His messengers. Crucifixion is hardly saying, “Come on in! Make yourself at home! Put your feet up while I get you some iced tea!”
Well, there you have it.
All 49 verses that mention Sodom.
And the few verses that mention her sins say NOTHING WHATSOEVER about homosexuality”

It is not the differences that divide us. It is
our inability to recognize, accept, and
celebrate those differences.

The Pistol fires back: In the words of Billy Shakespeare, “Me thinks thou doth protest too much.” You make a compelling (if somewhat lengthy) case for separating the sins of Sodom from homosexuality or homosexual behavior. I still believe the Bible (while admittedly saying very little) makes it nonetheless clear that homosexual behavior is contrary to God’s will.
Good post. The author missed the point on Leviticus, though. The “flaws of the shellfish argument” argument is bogus and if you read Leviticus 18 in context (and I know you all have it on your reading list), it is quite clear that homosexual behavior was one of the sins God was holding non-Israelites accountable for. Just read the beginning and end of the chapter, then all the prohibitions in between and you’ll see what I mean.

Atheist!
If we examine The Book of Enoch here we discover the beginning of crimes against humanity including drug use, weapons of war created and unnatural sexual relationships.
It all appears to be related to a war against order that was created by the creation gods wishing to place themselves on the throne of The Ultimate Creator. For their rebellion against the natural order, teaching the children these abominations, a place of torment was created for them.
Today we can realize the consequence of their rebellion, children burning out their brains as some begin smoking pot at the age of twelve years old. Wars being created in order to create wealth from the sale of weapons of destruction, and men controlling other men via sodomy.
So it appears this sickness is a control mechanism used to tell The Ultimate Authority His natural order is invalid, therefore, unnecessary.
Many are saying, in these final days upon the face of this earth, “do not judge another, lest you be judged” yet if we do not love our brother enough to warn him of his destructive path, how then can we say that we love our brother.
The difference between judgement and control appears to either be based on a matter of control via terror, or loving tarra. What each man must therefore focus on, is his warning to his brother based on love for his brother, or is it based on the same control mechanism of terror used by the sodomite over his brother to control his brother.
It appears that the primary concern The true Christ had with the teachers of the law, was their use of fear to control others behavior, rather than teaching the children, that if they truly loved the source of their being, they would have no desire to disrespect Him.
I fear we are seeing a re-manifestation of this mindset today. Here, even in this blogs comments we are seeing those who desire to denounce one of the most obvious, that if this man truly knew himself, he would then realize a loving, caring and concerned Ultimate Authority who must allow all men to reap what they sow, as what we feed the divine matrix, is what is reflected back to us.
(Brother, bear with me, i know this isnt your view, but the view of some of your readers.) “Okay you are right. I will stop being gay and become heterosexual. Can I go to heaven now? Will that be enought to satisfy God? NO?!? But I stopped being gay! Thats what Christians have been warning me will send me to hell and now that I stop you tell me thats not good enough? Wait, I need to accept Christ, His gift of eternal life and know his unfailing love? He died to set me free from all the power of sin, no matter what sin it is? Even sins that I dont recognise as sins? God will love me and accept me and cherish me even if I experience same sex attraction? Why the heck didnt someone tell me this before instead of telling me I’m going to hell for being gay.”
This is the message which fails to reach people in the “gay” community, because we are so preoccupied with changing their sexual behavior. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:” If we, who have Christ and the Holy Spirit, find it so hard to avoid lust and sin and deny our own flesh, how can we possibly expect, nay, REQUIRE it from those who do not have Christ? Only one thing can save us from eternal damnation, and ceasing homosexual activity is not it. We pray that sexual healing will come as a result of the regenerative power of the Spirit and renewing of the mind. May the God of peace warm your heart toward those who face temptation that you have never faced.
I can’t believe you go through all of these mental gymnastics. It is hard for me to wrap my mind around the whole separate reality that christians make up–each point built up to support another point and so on.
I wonder how many different gods people have made up since we first stopped dragging our knuckles and learned to talk? It’s amazing that people still rely on religion–any religion–it is all so ludicrous–it justifies nothing.
Just think about all the misery it has caused with holy wars, inquisitions, witch trials, crusades, jihads, etc. Religion is such a stumbling block. It is like a sick man using the cause of his suffering to treat the symptoms of his suffering. It is a madness.
Persons who adhere to Abrahamic Relegious beliefs seem to always forget that many many people in this world do not…..And as one of them I always wonder why you even care what other people do sexually. Is your belief in God so shallow that sex is your overiding obsession. Go solve world hunger or Cancer or something like that….leave Homosexuality..Stem Cells and Abortion to folks whon can keep a rational perspective about those issues….Not everyone cares what Jesus would think …Dont think so?…just go ask a Buddhist ….! -) Now calm down and try thinking about how we can make the world a better place ….COEXIST! Enjoy your faith and let others enjoy theirs !
This still one hot topic in the media and the church world. This is a good post.
I have been reading some of your other articles. A google search brought me to your article “Having a Great Time, Wish I Were Dead.” I am now curious about this bipolar disorder. I have never considered that I could have it. I go for months feeling great and then, like this week, all I can think about half the time is death and suicide.. I imagine awful ways in which I could die, most of which are suicidal, whether inflicted on myself or, by forcing someone else’s hand in that direction.
Anyway, I am grateful to find that you are a believer. I will definitely be reading more of your writing.
P.S. I have downloaded and begun reading “An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness.” Thanks for recommending it.
